OSHA recommends warehouse managers develop a thorough maintenance and inspection program. Get a desk with built-in storage

When you have a small home office, storage tends to be an issue. Where on Earth will you store your stacks of sticky notes and cool pens? Before you know it, you’re elbow-deep in loose papers, wires. Invest in a desk that not only serves as a desk but can also be used to store all of those essentials that you don’t want lying around or in reach of your little ones!

Add a rug or cushions

This will give you a cosier feel to your work space, it can also make your workspace feel bigger.

Light it up

As well as ensuring you get as much natural light as possible we recommend turning off the harsh overhead lighting (that you don’t miss from your work office!) and instead using a mix of floor and table lamps or even candles to give off a smoother light that still does it’s job without making you squint!

Find a comfy chair

If you have a comfortable chair you can use as your work chair, this will make a big difference if you’re sitting at a desk or table all day.

Clean up your mess (computer, papers, laptops etc)

A clean and tidy working environment can make the world of difference.

Making sure your desk or table is free of clutter so that you have space to work, and that it’s clean and tidy can leave your feeling calmer and more productive.

Make sure you also tidy up at the end of your working day so that you come away from work and enjoying the evening for yourself and the family.

Natural lighting

If possible, choose a place for your workspace environment that has natural lighting. This can be beneficial to your mood and increase productivity. We also recommend you get outside a 20 minutes or so, to give you a break from work and also get much needed fresh air.

Being near a window while working can also up your vitamin D levels, which helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, and these nutrients are needed to keep muscle, teeth and bones healthy.

If it’s possible to do so, your workspace should be in a room or space as far away as possible from the place where you sleep if you want to increase your productivity.

How to keep your food fresher for longer

It’s sensible right now to limit your contact with other people, so reducing the number of trips you make to the supermarket is something we should all be trying to do. Online deliveries are a great way to do this, but we know that at this time it can be virtually impossible to get a delivery slot. One way to reduce the number of shopping trips you need is to make the food you do buy last for longer. Here are a few tips on how to make your fresh and frozen food last for as long as possible.

Store your food at the correct temperature

If you want your food to last as long as possible, you need to store it at the right temperature. That’s between 0°C and 5°C in your fridge, or between -18°C and -20°C in your freezer.

Don’t put hot food in your fridge or freezer

Regardless of whether leftovers are going in the fridge or the freezer, you should always let them cool to room temperature before you put them in. Otherwise, the warmth of your recently cooked food will send the temperature in your fridge and freezer skyrocketing. Not only will that reduce the freshness of other food in the fridge, which needs to be kept at a stable temperature, but it will also force your fridge freezer to work harder to cool down, pushing up your energy bills.

Use super cool and fast-freeze functions

Most modern fridge freezers have supercool or superfreeze settings. Although using these regularly will send your energy bills soaring, you could consider using them each time you load up your fridge or freezer with a new shop. They will get your food to the correct temperature much more quickly, meaning that it will stay fresher for longer.

Store foods on the correct shelves

As a general rule, the higher the shelf, the higher the temperature will be. It’s not a bad thing; if you know this you can use it to your advantage.

Raw meat, fish and seafood should be kept between 0°C and 3°C in order to lock in freshness and prevent harmful bacteria from tucking in. This means you should keep them on the bottom shelf or, if your fridge has one, a chill compartment that’s specially designed for this purpose.

Butter and cheese are less perishable, so they’re best kept near the top of your fridge where it’s warmer. Condiments are also a good bet for the higher shelves.

Middle shelves are good for leftovers, cooked meats, pizza and any fruit.

New guide issued helps businesses with cold storage warehouse safety

The Cold Chain Federation have launched a useful health and safety guide for businesses operating cold storage warehouses.

Operating and working in a cold storage warehouse doesn’t come without its risks and challenges.

Businesses with cold storage warehouses must take care to comply with all relevant health and safety regulations to protect their employees from harm and keep their cold storage warehouse at a consistent and efficient temperature.

On January 31 they published a comprehensive guide called Keeping People Safe in a Cold Store, which can be downloaded from their website.

Shane Brennan, the Cold Chain Federation’s Chief Executive says that the guide is “the first health and safety guide of its kind specifically aimed at cold stores”. He adds that the guide aims to “save businesses time and help them with health and safety compliance in an efficient and structured way.”
